Terriers

The Irish Terrier. The Irish Terriers have a nickname - the "Dare Devils", they combine remarkable sweetness towards the human race with rather an aggressive attitude towards the canine one. They have few equals for reckless courage. During an African hunt some years ago, a lion was brought to bay in dense bush. The hunters loosed their dog pack, including an Irish Terrier, in an attempt to dislodge the lion, but without success. Then suddenly the king of beasts bolted from cover. As he dashed into the open, his tail streamed straight out behind. And there, teeth locked on the end of it, was the little Irish Terrier!

A true terrier in every sense of the word he is between the Fox Terrier and Airdale in size. They are somewhat higher on the leg than Fox Terriers, and also more racily built. His densy wiry coat is red-gold. He stands around 18 inches at the withers. General appearance lithe, wiry and very powerful. He is famous as a hunter and vermin destroyer. Playful with children and a reliable family guardian, the Irish Terrier is at home in country or city.

The Jack Russell Terrier. No kennel club recognizes this dog as a breed, but in Great Britain the gay and spirited little terrier has long enjoyed considerable popularity. The name derives from a Devon parson who had a pack of hounds he used for foxes. He liked wirehaired breeds with medium-long legs, and whenever he found a good specimen, he added it to his pack. The present crossbreed has smoother hair, goes to ground or catches rats, is friendly and alert. In appearance Jack Russells resemble Fox Terriers but have shorter legs.
