Terriers

Of twenty-two terrier breeds, twenty-one originated in the British Isles. Terriers were bred as vermin killers, dogs to bolt the fox and the badger from the earth. Their name comes from the Latin word for earth, "terra" and indicates that the main function has always been to go to earth. Their courage, independence of spirit, and gaiety ensure that they will always have plenty of admirers.

The Airedale Terrier. The largest of the terriers took his name from the valley of the Aire, Yorkshire. The Airedale is an allaround performer - as a guard, as a guide for the blind and as a hunter. During World War I his bravery made him a dependable battlefield messenger. He also posseses the terrier flair for the hunt, and is afraid of nothing that walks or crawles. Mountain lions, wolves, and bears have felt his viselike jaws. Despite his ferocity in the field, the big fellow remains a puppy at heart and enjoys being pampered. As a pet, he is a thoughtful companion to every member of the family and is particularly patient with children.

He is dependable, extremely good looking and devoted friend. Anyone who has ever owned an Airedale believes that this big terrier could win the hart of a statue. Height about 24 inches. The colour of head, ears and legs should be tan and the body black. Head fairly long with flat skull; ears small V-shaped, tail docked, set high and carried gaily. The coat should be hard and wiry.
