Sporting Dogs
The German Short-haired Pointer. The German Short-haired Pointers descend from the old slow, heavy Spanish Pointers. The objective was a breed that would be capable of tracking and pointing its game and retrieving it after it had been shot. Webbed feet and water repellent coat make him a favourite with waterfowl hunters. Colour and docked tail distinguish this attractive, tractable breed from the Pointer. The flat hard coat is solid liver, or liver and white, spotted and ticked. Height 21-25 inches.
The German Wire-haired Pointer (Draht-haar). German breeders have tried hard to produce a perfect working dog which would hunt, point, track and retrieve both game and vermin in any sort of weather. The most successful attempt was made at the end of the last century and produced the Wire-haired Pointer. A great asset to the Wire-hair is his remarkable double coat. An outer layer of Wire-hair straight and coarse lies flat and protects him from the cruelest, low-growing bushes. In fall and winter a dense, soft undercoat insulates him from cold. Bushy brows and whiskers protect eyes and face. Colour liver and white usually spotted and ticked, but sometimes solid liver. Nose dark brown. Head and ears brown. Tail docked to 2/5 of original length. Height 24-26 inches.
