Sporting Dogs

The Whippets. The dog resembles a typical Greyhound in miniature, and was officially recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1895. Whippet's are now one of the universally popular breeds since their close coats give no trouble and the dogs are affectionate, intelligent and seldom aggressive. Height 18 inches. Coat fine, short of any colour. The long and lean head is rather wide between the eyes, and flat at the top. The rose-shaped ears are small and fine in texture. The neck is long and muscular, elegantly arched. Chest deep, back broad and square, rather long and slightly arched over the loins. Legs long and strong. Tail long and tapering.

The Irish Wolfhound. A majestic hound of Irish descent, the Irish Wolfhound frequently appears in Celtic legends and history. After the extermination of the wolves the breed degenerated and almost disappeared. Many breeders devoted themselves to the revival of these dogs, using such pure-bred hounds as they could find and making crosses with other large hounds to restore size, stamina and symmetry. The result is the magnificent Wolfhound that we know today. Height is minimum 31 inches. Colour grey, brindle, red, black, pure white or fawn. Coat rough and hard. Head long with powerful jaws; ears small; body racy; tail long. Beneath its shaggy brow and clear eye lurks the mind and soul of a lapdog, for this biggest of all breeds has over the centuries developed devotion and love for children and adults alike.
