Non-Sporting Dogs

The Norwegian Buhund. In his native country the Norwegian Buhund is primarily a farm dog. These dogs have all the attributes of the Spitz family with upstanding ears and a tail that curls over the back. This most intelligent breed is supported by a large band of admirers. Height approximates 18 inches. The double coat has long harsh top hair with a soft wooly undercoat, longer on the neck and body that the head and limbs. The skull is lean, light and wedge-shaped, being broadest between the ears. Preferred colours are black or red. A white collar around the neck is allowed.

The Old English Sheepdog (Bobtail). The Old English Sheepdog is an ancient breed of great charm and wisdom. Although now seldom used as a working sheepdog, the Bobtail makes an excellent guard. These dogs enjoy looking after their master's property whether it be the house, children or chickens.

The Old English Sheepdog was bred to drive sheep and cattle to fair or market. He customarily had his tail bobbed - hence his affectionate nickname Bobtail. Some puppies of the breed are born tailless but docking is usually necessary. Bobtails are strongly and compactly built but of great symmetry. The heavy coat and characteristic pacing movement is apt to give an erratic impression of slowness and clumsiness, whereas these dogs are, in fact, very active and there is a peculiar elasticity in their gallop. The skull is rather square, the jaw is fairly long, strong, and square, and there is a spot below the eyes. Eyes are dark, ears small and carried flat by the side of the head. Forelegs should have plenty of bone, and should be straight, loins stout, hindquarters round and muscular. The Bobtail looks back through his shaggy veil with the quiet dignity of one who knows that his place in our affection is secure.
