Choosing and buying your dog

Responsibility. Far too many people, good-hearted but thoughtless, start dog-ownership without asking themselves if they are prepared to devote a little time every day to the dog's comfort and well-being. If these questions cannot be answered honestly, some unfortunate dog is going to suffer. The first thing that any dog owner must have is a sense of responsibility - a puppy or adult dog is a living and loving creature and cannot be taken into our homes one day and cast out the next. No one is forced to acquire a dog. Before doing so they should be certain that they really want it and that they can provide it with two basic necessities - affection and companionship. It is unkind to keep a dog when all the household is out of house all and every day. It cannot be wondered at if a dog left alone for hours relieves its boredom by destroying chairs and cushions, scratching at doors or constantly barking. This is not to say that a dog can never be left alone - in fact it should be trained that there are occasions when its presence is not required. Provided it has been given the opportunity to relieve itself, has a comfortable sleeping place and fresh water, a dog can fulfil its duty as guardian of the house while its owners are away for several hours. A dog is entirely dependent upon its owner for all its needs, and it is in the dog's owner's power to make its life happy and healthy, or to condemn it to a miserable existence.

There is another important duty to every dog - inoculations against infections and contagious diseases. Lastly, no dog should ever be turned out of the house to exersise itself and should never under any circumstance, be allowed off a lead on any road, for an accident can happen in a second. And if a dog dies or is injured through neglect, it is then too late to be sorry.

Before you get a puppy be sure that you are willing to take the above responsibilities.
